INSSO will be visiting India between the 28th November and 7th December at the invitation of NSDC and the fledgling network of Indian Sector Skills Councils. Visiting New Delhi and Mumbai, Chairman Tom Bewick and International Project Manager, Sarah MacShane, will meet with a number of key industry representatives involved in the set up of the network. India became a full member of INSSO in June 2011.

Commenting on the visit, Tom Bewick said: “I’ve been visiting India since 2008 and in that time I have followed with interest how the country’s ambitious national skill development strategy is being implemented. The NSDC and SSCs are an important part of that equation and as someone who helped set up the UK system, including a sector skills council from scratch, I’m looking forward to sharing ideas with my Indian counterparts.”

INSSO’s inaugural conference was a fantastic success: Work Global, Act Sectoral, was attended by more than 125 delegates from across the globe. From sector skills councils, education and skills organizations, TVET providers to national & international policy-makers, and skills experts the conference and the GlobalSkills debate was extremely well attended.

“In these uncertain times, sectorally based skills development is an approach that is too important to pass up. We must get it right.” Andrew Cardozo, Executive Director, Alliance of Sector Councils, Canada

Delegates heard about the cutting edge projects that are helping bridge the gap between employers and education, how different countries manage their resources and skills, therefore staying head of the latest global employment and skills trends.

The INSSO conference allowed delegates to realize that the sector-based approach can work across international borders and provided all with the hope of working together to supply better futures for the next generations.

“Greater international cooperation on sectoral skills can provide young people with the most relevant skills for a global market, as they face the legacy of recession.” Katie Epstein, INSSO associate director

Operating in 70 countries, Pearson’s education business combines 150 years of experience in publishing with the latest learning technology, qualifications and assessment. Pearson’s UK president, Rod Bristow commented:

“INSSO is homing in on and driving an important change in the way we need to think about education. Skills challenges are now global, and they are fast changing. Employers and educators from all countries need to work ever more closely together to define their future labour market needs in the context of the global economy, and help education systems respond quickly to develop people with skills that meet them. Pearson recognises Sector Skills Councils – and their equivalents – as key partners in making this happen, and we’re pleased through our support for this conference to be able to bring together representatives from so many countries to learn from one another.”

Tom Bewick, INSSO’s chairman added:

“Our members are delighted to be working with such a respected global brand like Pearson. With operations worldwide, supporting both education and industry, they are the perfect commercial partner to our inaugural conference. With sector skills organisations worldwide – representing and supporting the skills of over half a billion people – INSSO members look forward to building an ongoing and strong relationship with the Pearson group of companies.”
