About the Industry Training Federation

The Industry Training Federation (ITF) is a voluntary membership-based organisation, representing all of New Zealand’s Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) to government. The ITF works with agencies and industry groups to improve policy and the delivery of industry training and vocational education and training.

  • Industry training is organised by Industry Training Organisations (ITOs). ITOs are established by industries, and recognised by government, and funded by both.
  • There are currently 39 ITOs in New Zealand. ITOs have coverage of 78% of the New Zealand workforce.
  • Industry training covers both the traditional trades and many other areas across the economy in the primary industries, manufacturing, infrastructure, constructions, services and retail, and the government and community services sectors.
  • All industry training is linked to national industry-relevant standards and qualifications.
  • ITOs’ most important role is to connect the skill needs of industry and the labour market with the vocational education and training system.
  • ITOs:
    • provide information about industry skill demand – to increase the real power of students, employees, employers and industry, and to inform providers.
    • define national skill standards and qualifications required by industry – ensuring the value and relevance of investment in education and training.
    • broker training to meet the needs of employees in industry – linking individual workplace learning to national industry skill standards.
  • There are around 190,000 people involved in industry training every year in New Zealand. This is about ten percent of the New Zealand workforce.
  • Around 35,000 businesses and organisations of all sizes are involved in industry training each year.

Mission

The Industry Training Federation (ITF) has a mission to lead a skilled future for the New Zealand workforce. It does this by supporting ITOs to transform New Zealand’s workforce and workplaces.

This is carried out through:

  • Championing a skilled and productive workforce for New Zealand,
  • Creating the environment for ITOs to transform New Zealand’s workforce, and
  • Building the capability of ITOs to transform New Zealand’s workforce.
