About Industry Skills Councils

There are 11 national Industry Skills Councils (ISCs) that cover the main industry sectors  in the Australian economy.  Each organisation works independently but collaborative work is carried out through the ISC Forum.

ISCs are not-for-profit, independent companies led by industry-based boards of directors.  Their funding is provided primarily by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

These organisations have a key role in advising government on national industry skill requirements and providing advice to industry on the national vocational education training system.

ISCs have a responsibility to liaise with a broad range of industry, government and community key stakeholders including, enterprises, industry peak bodies, training organisations, unions, government departments and regulators.

The ISCs are:

  • AgriFood Skills Australia
  • Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council
  • Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council
  • EE-Oz Training Standards
  • ForestWorks
  • Government Skills Australia
  • Innovation & Business Skills Australia
  • Manufacturing Skills Australia
  • Skills DMC
  • Service Skills Australia
  • Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council.

The Mission of the ISCs

The formal roles of ISCs are set down by the Australian government and reflected in their funding agreement. These roles are:

  • Providing industry intelligence and advice to Skills Australia, government and enterprises on workforce development and skills needs;
  • Actively supporting the development, implementation and continuous improvement of high quality training and workforce development products and services, including Training Packages;
  • Providing independent skills and training advice to enterprises, including matching identified training needs with appropriate training solutions; and
  • Working with enterprises, employment service providers, training providers and government to allocate training places.
